"Anxiety is not the problem. It's the alarm system."
Anxiety is a protective signal; the goal is recalibration, not suppression.
Listen to this episode read by Kelly in her teaching voice.
Cold Open
"If your anxiety feels random, it's not. It's patterned."
"And in this episode I'm going to show you how to turn the alarm down — without fighting it."
The Alarm System
Anxiety is an over-protective prediction engine. Your body is trying to prevent a future pain it believes is likely.
So instead of asking, "How do I stop anxiety?" Ask: "What is anxiety trying to prevent?"
The Alarm Triangle
Uncertainty + Meaning + Urgency
- 1.Uncertainty — I don't know what will happen.
- 2.Meaning — and it means something terrible about me.
- 3.Urgency — I must solve it NOW.
Take out just one corner, the alarm drops.
Real-World Example
Email from your boss: "Can we talk?"
Uncertainty: what's it about?
Meaning: I'm in trouble.
Urgency: I need to fix it right now.
We're going to remove urgency — fast.
"Urgency Off"
Try this with me right now
- 1
Look slightly to the left... then slightly to the right.
- 2
Let your eyes move slowly like you're scanning a horizon. Do that twice.
- 3
Exhale longer than you inhale.
- 4
Say internally: "Not now. I'm not solving this in an alarm state."
- 5
Pick one micro-action: "I'll respond in 20 minutes," or "I'll write two bullet points," or "I'll ask one clarifying question."
Feel the difference? That's urgency dissolving.
Weekly Integration
The 30-Second Reset you can use anytime:
- 1
Slow horizon scan (left/right)
- 2
Long exhale
- 3
Phrase: "Not now."
- 4
Choose one micro-action
